Potatoes au Gratin

Ingredients

1lb      Potatoes, peeled, and sliced very thin (Yukon Gold)

1C      Heavy cream

1C      Milk

2/3C   Grated Gruyere cheese

4T       Butter

1         Salt to taste

1         Pepper to taste

1clove Garlic, peeled and cut in half

1         Grated fresh nutmeg to taste

1         Bay leaf

Process

Boil milk with bay leaf in a saucepan, taking care not to let it boil over

Preheat oven to 325F

Add 3T butter, salt, pepper, grated nutmeg, cream, and potatoes to the pan with the hot milk

Simmer for 20 minutes or until just tender, stirring from time to time with a wooden spoon to separate the potatoes

Remove from the heat and set aside

Grease an au Gratin dish with the remaining 1T of butter

Rub dish with a cut piece of garlic

Pour in potato mixture and sprinkle with grated Gruyere cheese

Bake for 40-45 minutes

If the surface is not browned sufficiently place under the broiler for about 3 minutes

Remove and let cool for 5 minutes before serving
